Unscramble Assault - It's not a completely fragmented view of mine, which is reckless and unfortunate because I've gotten a lot of emails from people on both sides who think I'm missing important points. This is me, since this is a short blog post.
The most common answer is that I'm not actually suggesting anything. Which is true. I think this is an impossible issue to solve because it is a serious cultural problem embedded in the fabric of "being American" that may take generations to resolve.

But this touches on an important point when thinking about solutions - why is this issue so difficult to fix? I like to think from first principles because I understand something about what it is

Gun manufacturers did something very clever when they created guns like the AR-15 (which, by the way, is not one type of gun, but a whole bunch of different types of the same general gun). They created a weapon that doesn't look too different from a standard shotgun, but looks a lot like a weapon like the M-4, which is a fully automatic military style weapon. The key difference is that the M-4 is a true assault weapon — it can be used as both a semi-automatic and automatic weapon. An AR is not an automatic weapon nor is it properly classified as an “assault rifle”. It's just a cool hunting rifle.
To better understand this important point, here is a Remington 742, which is a "semi" that looks like a regular old wooden shotgun. You can unload a large magazine in seconds. And here is the AR-15. These weapons look different, but they're not that different. And here's where this discussion gets tricky: Here's a Glock with a 50 round mag. Which semi-automatic is the most dangerous? Well, in the right hands this is a difficult question to answer.
So you have a real problem here — “assault rifles” are already banned, so the left needs to stop shouting about them. But can we ban "semi-automatic" weapons when the range of semi-automatics is so broad (and vague) that it can include almost any modern rifle and pistol? I say no because Americans love their guns so much and the category of "semi-auto" is so broad that it can't realistically be applied in a useful sense.
Now, a big problem with this is that most liberals, and even many conservatives, don't know the difference between a semi-automatic or an assault weapon and use the terms interchangeably. For a gun rights advocate, you lose the argument the moment you start calling the AR-15 an "assault rifle" because an assault rifle is a specific type of rifle that can be used as a semi-automatic. AR is just a semi. So you lose the conversation the moment you get this fact wrong because you obviously don't know what you're talking about.

This poses a problem for any gun reform advocate because the AR is a beautiful shotgun. Maniacs who kill people don't necessarily need to use it, but it's a good weapon for mass murder, and it looks cool, so that's my best guess as to why it's the weapon of choice. But, really, there's no reason you can't use some pistols or other hunting rifles and do more damage.
More importantly, this confusion reinforces the brand created by gun advocates. Gun advocates want everyone to believe that guns are not killing machines. They want everyone to think it's just sports gear. This is obviously bullshit, because guns were literally invented to kill people. Guns are killing machines that also happen to serve as fun sporting tools. When you allow the distinction between sports equipment and killing machines, you strengthen the NRA's case because a sporting tool can reasonably be protected while a killing machine cannot.
We must not confuse this point. Guns are designed to kill people. That's what they always aim for. The fact that they can be used for other things is tangential to their essence as a human killing machine. This is a point that needs to be emphasized because it is the basic first principle of the invention of firearms.
The problem, I think, is that we have forgotten this first principle and are mistaking guns for sports games. Decades of clever marketing have created a world where the gun is now widely perceived as a toy rather than a killing machine. This marketing has incorporated political and historical aspects to reinforce the misleading idea that firearms are just sporting toys. And this myth has become so embedded in our culture and politics that we now have more guns than people in the US. And the data on this is clear - more guns = more gun deaths. So even if you could somehow ban semi-automatic weapons (which you can't why, see above), you still have an egg that is nearly impossible to crack.

It's depressing, in all honesty. I want to understand big, complex problems because I want to give some objective answers about how to solve those problems. But this is such a deeply embedded cultural issue that I worry it won't be resolved by either side. And the small fixes we implement will not be enough. Banning bump stocks will not stop the murders. Banning AR-15 style weapons (whatever that means) will not stop the murders. Better background checks won't stop murders. Shouting "but Australia" is unrealistic. And as it turns out, it will reinforce the extremist arguments on both sides and dismantle them.
Note: Depending on how obnoxious and emotional the response to this post is, I'll consider posting what I think are reasonable changes in a future post.
